What does it take to leave your home country for opportunities abroad? For Jad Abuhamed, the TOEFL® test helped him succeed in an academic environment after fleeing a war-torn country.
Jad’s pathway to his current role as a health researcher was tough and challenging. Originally from Syria, he graduated from medical school just as the war began. The unrest in his home country left him with no choice but to leave his family and flee to Lebanon. Jad took the TOEFL test as he was applying for scholarships. The official TOEFL® test preparation materials did more than help Jad master the test, they also gave him a glimpse into life on a university campus. Because the TOEFL test material was university-related rather than just language-oriented, it prepared him for the university classroom in ways he did not expect.
Getting an advantage in the classroom
Taking the TOEFL test gave Jad a real advantage in the classroom and beyond. He was awarded an IIE scholarship to study as a Master of Public Health in Finland. He hopes to work to make a difference in such fields as the environment, minority rights, and the effects of globalization. Says Jad, “Now, more than ever, I appreciate English learning as an invaluable skill to improve myself and progress in my career. It began with the TOEFL test.”
