Over the past year, the TOEFL® test has introduced a number of changes to help make it more convenient and accessible for test takers like you to follow your academic dreams. With more choices for testing, exclusive scoring features, authentic prep materials and more, you can keep your plans moving forward at a time when so much is uncertain.
Take the test in a test center or at home
When test centers were forced to close in the early days of the pandemic, the TOEFL program responded by launching the TOEFL iBT® Special Home Edition so that students could still take their English proficiency test and meet their admissions deadlines. The Special Home Edition is the same TOEFL iBT test that tens of thousands of students have taken through the years in a test center—only now administered at home and monitored online by a human proctor.
As TOEFL iBT test centers begin to reopen, they are implementing enhanced safety and health procedures and processes to help keep you safe, including additional cleaning procedures, social distancing, and mask requirements. However, if your test center is still closed or has limited seats due to social distancing requirements, (or you would simply prefer to take the test at home), the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is a safe and convenient option. Search for open test centers and available dates near you, or read on to learn more about the Special Home Edition and more test experience improvements.
Because the Special Home Edition is the same test, the content, format, on-screen experience and scoring is identical to the test you take in a test center. And the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is available everywhere that you would normally expect to take the TOEFL iBT test, except Mainland China and Iran. What’s more, you can now test on a PC using Windows® operating system versions 10, 8 or 7, or on a Mac® with Mac OS X 10.5 or higher.
Discover a better test experience
Now is the time to take advantage of the recent enhancements to the TOEFL test experience.
For starters, the test was shortened by 30 minutes and now takes less than three hours to complete. The test structure remains the same but with fewer questions in each section.
You can also continue to showcase your top overall performance with MyBest™ scores, which combines the highest section scores from test dates in the previous two years and sends them to admissions officers.
Most recently, TOEFL iBT Reading and Listening section scores can now be viewed immediately upon finishing the test. These instant, unofficial scores can help you make informed decisions on score reporting and retesting.
These plus many more enhancements are designed to give you the flexibility and convenience you need to succeed. With a better test experience from start to finish, you can’t go wrong when you choose the TOEFL test.
